Vocations
What is a Vocation?
The word "vocation" comes from the Latin root word vocare, which means "to call." Every vocation, then, is a calling from God; specifically, it is a calling out of oneself to serve another. Whoever that "other" is will be an essential component of what one is being called to. One can be called to live for and to serve God through another person through the unity of matrimony; one can be called to serve God through sacramental service in the Church through the priesthood, offering the sacraments to the People of God; one can also be called to serve God by seeking Christian perfection through the evangelical counsels — poverty, chastity, and obedience — in consecrated life.
How to Discern a Vocation?
It is not easy to discern one's vocation, but it also should not be a straining or anxious endeavor. Anyone discerning his vocation should, in dialogue with God in his heart, seek what would give him peace and where his talents can best be used for God's glory. Of course, some interaction with the Monastery is necessary as part of the discernment process. Anyone interested in monastic life who would like to pursue it is welcome to come visit us at St. John's Parish.
